In an emergency, when time is of the essence, being able to land an Ambulance seconds away from specialist care, is crucial. For many patients, an ambulance could represent the difference between life and death.
Vichoor in Thiruvallur District – nearly around 25 kms from Chennai Central – is a small village surrounded by many small villages with a combined population of about 10,000 people.
The commute for the people is only thru share Auto and ONE bus ply between Vichoor to Washermanpet. The village has a small public health facility several kilometres away and it becomes difficult to get to the nearest hospital, making it particularly difficult for patients to access health care. For critical treatment the nearest decent-size hospital is Govt. Stanley Hospital, Broadway.
As the village doesn’t have an ambulance it is very difficult to reach to the hospitals in case of emergencies. The high cost of transportation often deters poorer families from accessing healthcare. In cases of emergency, precious time is wasted over deciding whether to spend on a private vehicle or not and the loss of time leads to deaths.
When Membership Chairperson Lion Arif Nawaz broached the possibility of donating the Ambulance to the village, the club members responded with an emphatic “YES Please” and so commenced the project to secure an ambulance.
There is no limit to the ways one can use their strengths to help the needy and Charity Heroes are a special group of people who give frequently. A visit to the village by our Past District Governor – PMJF Lion L.K.S. Syed Ahamed served as an opportunity to understand the needs to give something much more valuable and a lot less materialistic: the gift of life, itself.
The greatest gift to the society is an ambulance believes our Past District Governor – PMJF Lion L.K.S. Syed Ahamed and he seized the opportunity to donate the Ambulance to our club’s adopted “Vichoor” village – this is his latest from a string of continuous donations to philanthropic causes. One of the many reasons, perhaps the most significant that Lion L.K.S. Syed Ahamed will be remembered is for his philanthropy. Also, perhaps his most lasting legacy will be the way he has used his wealth to improve the lives of others who are less privileged.
District Governor PMJF Lion P.V. Prakash Kumar was the Chief Guest at the hand-over event, on behalf of Lions Club of Chennai Skyline – District 324 A1 the fully fitted, well-equipped laced with modern facilities ambulance was handed over to the Vichoor Village Panchayat President Vichoor S. Shankar in the presence of First Vice District Governor PMJF Lion S.V. Manickam, Past District Governor PMJF Lion L.K.S. Syed Ahamed, Region Chairperson – PMJF R. Ravi Shankar, Zone Chairperson – PMJF Lion Prasad Hari Parulekar, President – MJF Lion M Ghouse Babu, Membership Chairperson – PMJF Lion Arif Nawaz and other members of the club.
